A kidney transplant operation involves taking out a kidney from the body of one person and implanting it surgically in the body of a patient whose own kidneys have failed.
The transplanted kidney functions as the patient’s kidneys. While a transplant is not a permanent cure for renal (kidney) failure, it does allow patients to live a more normal life than that experienced on dialysis. Patients with well- functioning transplants have a greater sense of well-being and can enjoy a lifestyle free of dependence on dialysis treatment.
However, they must always continue with their transplant drug treatment to prevent rejection of the transplanted kidney.
